Breast implants are a popular surgery that enhance the overall shape and size of the breasts. The surgery in often in the media spotlight. Though many women opt to get the procedure, the actual psychological benefits of the surgery have not been proven.

The issue of self-esteem often comes up relating to the surgery. Many women believe having the surgery will increase their self-esteem. This may be true, but in some cases, the surgery can leave women feeling self-conscious. Men can place too much emphasize on the new breasts and that could cause women to feel uncomfortable. She may not be ready for all the attention the new breasts might gain.

There are two types of approved implants available on the market. They are saline-filled and silicone gel-filled. Another type is also currently being included in clinical trials. That type is gummy bear. The gummy bear type has been shown to not leak in testing which would be a great advantage to the other types. Testing is not complete and it is not known what class of people the gummy bear type would best fit as of this time.

Silicone implants are are close match to the natural breast. The have a feel smooth like the breast. The problem with silicone lies with the controversy that surrounds them. They were just recently put back on the market after being taken off for quite some time. There are now again approved but only in certain circumstances and for certain women.

Saline implants can be placed with a small incision. Silicone requires a larger incision because they are filled before they are placed in the body. Saline are filled after they are placed. The doctor can then use a syringe to adjust the size and shape by adding or removing liquid.

There are pros and cons to each of the different types. Saline has a major advantage because if it happens to rupture, the saline will not cause harm to the body. The body can absorb the saline. It is also easy to tell if a saline implant ruptures because it will essentially deflate. It will be very noticeable if there is a problem. If the silicone ruptures, it causes a slow leak. It will not be easily noticeable. Women who have silicone are recommended to have a MRI to check for leaks every few years. If a rupture occurs in either type, they must be removed.

Another advantage of saline is that it is considerably less expensive than silicone. Saline is generally easier to place than silicone, making it one reason for its less expensive cost. A disadvantage to saline is the fact that in some cases saline has been known to cause ripples or wrinkles in the breast. The skin type plays a role in determining if the rippling could potentially occur.

Many women decide to have plastic surgery to improve their appearance. Understanding that breast implants can be quite expensive and may require more surgeries down the road is important. Weighing all the pros and cons with the doctor and all risks involved is necessary before making any final decisions and going under the knife.

When you decide to have breast implants, it can help you to feel better about your appearance. Finding the right doctor to do the breast enhancement should be a careful and educated choice.
