This guide has been put together to help you enjoy the experience provided by such a great activity and minimize the learning curve a little for what some might consider a pretty tough sport. By following this guide you may find that you have what it takes to wake board with only an hour or so of practice.
To wakeboard successfully you will need to have the proper positioning for your body. This is one of the most important parts of wakeboarding. You should be laying on your back. The board should also be making a T shape, be perpendicular to the tow rope, and your feet should be facing with the board towards the boat. Rest the rope in your hands over the middle of the board and be sure to have your knees bent properly. They should be somewhat springy, and you should be faced to move toward the boat.
The boat will begin accelerating, and slowly you will lean back. You do not want to make the common mistake of trying to stand up while the boat is still gaining speed. This is often one of the things that give trouble to beginners. As you are accelerating the forward movement should pull you up slowly to an upright position.
One you begin to move towards the upright position, you will slowly have to move your dominant foot to the front of the board, and use this foot to lead you, like you were riding a skateboard. Use a swinging motion, and do it slowly and smoothly. This is one of the most difficult portions of learning how to wakeboard, but keep it up and you’ll master it!
After you have achieved the standing position and have your lead foot forward, it may take a few tries to really get comfortable while wake boarding. You want to move fluidly with the waves and cadence of the ocean. Also, to avoid any nasty face plants into the water, make sure that you keep the tow handle at the side of your hip that is facing the boat.
One you begin to get moving, make sure you alternate putting weight one either your heels or toes, as this will cause you to move in the respective direction that you need to move in. Once you get this down a few times, you should easily be able to go in and out the wake a few times.
Another great way to increase the thrill of wake boarding is through the use of a wakeboarding tower, which allows you to give the tow line a higher point of contact with the boat, and essentially allows you to move more easily and more freely through the water. This is one great way to enhance the wake boarding experience.
The bottom line is, wakeboarding is an extremely fast paced and fun sport that should be enjoyed by everybody. Doing this sport will leads to hours of enjoyment with friends.
