People who are desperate to conceive a child, and have exhausted other options, are keen to know what is in vitro fertilization, also known as IVF. When people cannot get pregnant any other way they can work with private clinic and a laboratory to get their sperm and eggs united in a controlled setting. This is often the only way some couples will be able to have children.
It can sometimes take more than one attempt to become pregnant, but when it’s successful, its known as the embryo transfer as it’s placed in to the uterus. IVF is not a simple procedure; there are five steps which must be completed to end up with a positive pregnancy result. Women who have been trying to get pregnant for a long time will often try IVF as a last resort.
It is often avoided because a lot of people cannot afford it. Even people who can afford it or are willing to raise the cash are sceptical because it’s not guaranteed to work. Some couples have been known to spend thousands before they get a result.
When the decision to take IVF has been confirmed the first step in the process is to start taking appropriate fertility medications to enhance ripening of the egg at the right time and to make sure one or more eggs are released. The more eggs that are released the more likely it will be to get a successful result. The eggs and the ovaries are checked using an ultrasound before the next step is taken.
In order to get the eggs out of the female safely, an ultrasound machine is used to guide the surgeon, who will use a hollow needle to take the eggs from the uterus. In order to relax, the individual having the procedure will become sedated. At around this time the man will be asked to retrieve some of his sperm through ejaculation.
When the egg and the sperm has been collected they are placed in a laboratory container in a special incubator to promote fertilization. In special circumstances, where fertilization appears unlikely, an individual sperm will be placed in the egg. All that is left to do now is closely monitor the dish to look out for any changes. When cell division becomes clear it can be implanted into the uterus within a few days.
In no later than six days the woman will return to the clinic where the embryo is placed using an instrument called a spectrum. The experts like to place a few embryos to allow for a better chance of the female becoming pregnant. This is also why multiple pregnancies occur when individuals use fertility treatment. All that is left to do now is go home and wait around for pregnancy symptoms. If this happens, a blood test will be carried out.
A lot of people would love to be able to experience the wonders of this treatment, but sadly not everyone can afford it which means it’s not accessible to everyone. Each cycle can cost several thousand which not everyone is prepared to save up for. In some countries funding may be available, but this option is still not available to everyone which means they may have to seek their own treatment on a private basis.
