Are you in a state of consternation about how to maximize your protein intake? If so, you are not alone. I mean, doesn’t it seem like every other diet plan has a different recommendation?
Even worse, some experts (and supplement companies) recommend having multiple protein shakes per day to assist in your weight loss efforts.
So, without further do, here what you need to know about protein to lose more fat:
1. What it’s made out of: Just like carbohydrates are made out of single units of sugar, protein is made out of amino acids. Now the key here is that some of these amino acids cannot be produced within your body. So you have to get them from dietary sources.
2. Its primary functions: Not only does protein make up skeletal muscle, but it’s also used to make reaction-accelerating enzymes, to make oxygen-transporting hemoglobin and to get your body to secrete satiety hormones. In fact, of all the macronutrients, protein produces the highest level of satiety.
3. Misconceptions: Perhaps the biggest misconception about protein is that having more of it while dieting spares muscle mass. In reality, having more protein actually increases the burning of muscle mass. You see, carbohydrates are the main macronutrient that spares muscle wasting.
4. Dangers of having too much: High protein diets were the craze not too long ago. The biggest allure here is that high protein diets dehydrate your muscles, thus producing an almost overnight loss in weight. Unfortunately, high protein diets also have the highest rates of weight gain rebound.
5. How much: I recommend having in between 25-30% of your calories come from protein. This is the highest amount you can have while not suffering from the negative side effects. At this level, you will maximize feel full hormones and slow down digestion rates.
Protein has become an extremely confusing macronutrient for most people. After all, with all the money to be made with high protein diets, the misconceptions and contradictions have run rampant. So take action on the advice in this article now!
